Pinball FX3: Cross-Platform Multiplayer with PS4 Limits

The Sony Stands Alone

One of the more fascinating features in the forthcoming Pinball FX3 is the incorporation of live multiplayer among opponents. Now, you no longer have to merely rely on an easily fabricated scoreboard online to demonstrate that you are superior to someone. While I had not anticipated cross-platform functionality to be a part of the experience, Zen Studios has declared that FX3 will offer competition across platforms. How astonishing!

Surprisingly, PS4 players will be restricted to matchmaking with other PS4 counterparts and PC players. As for all the others (Windows 10, PC, Xbox One), they will have the opportunity to engage with users from any version for multiplayer shenanigans, with the exception of PS4. I assume there truly is nothing we can do regarding this.

Concerning the list of playable tables, nearly every DLC table from the previous installment will be transferred into 3. Only five are not making the cut, which can be attributed to licensing matters. They are as follows:

  • South Park Pinball 2 Table Pack
  • Street Fighter Pinball
  • Ninja Gaiden Pinball
  • Plants vs. Zombies Pinball
  • Ms. Splosion Man Pinball

What is particularly astonishing is that offerings such as Star Wars Pinball, Bethesda Pinball, and Marvel Pinball are all receiving a free transfer. One might have thought that those respective IP owners would expect players to shell out additional cash, but somehow Zen Studios has worked its charm. Well done to them!

There is no information regarding a Switch release or even if the mobile ports will incorporate multiplayer, but apparently, the game is approaching “very soon,” as stated by Zen Studios. It will be intriguing to observe how the older tables will appear on a brand new engine and if they will include any novel gameplay features. I would venture to guess not, which is not overly detrimental given the low cost of porting them.
