The Project Scorpio Lives On in Xbox One X Special Edition

When it comes to video game hardware, it is often the case that codenames are far more appealing than the eventual real names that are disclosed. Such is the situation with the new Xbox. E3 crushed our expectations that Microsoft would retain the Project Scorpio label when the (presumably more brand-aligned) Xbox One X was unveiled.

Project Scorpio, however, is not entirely defunct. At gamescom today, Microsoft made an announcement about the Xbox One X Project Scorpio edition. It is an Xbox One X with the words “Project Scorpio” emblazoned on both the console and the controller. Microsoft claims that there is also a “sophisticated and dynamic graphic pattern covering the exterior,” along with packaging that draws inspiration from the original Xbox.

The Project Scorpio Edition also marks the first chance to pre-order the Xbox One X. Leading retailers such as Amazon and the Microsoft Store have it up for grabs at $500. (If the pages aren’t live at the moment, they will be shortly.) Microsoft has informed us that the Project Scorpio edition is rather scarce in quantity and will be sold until the supplies are exhausted.
