Final Fantasy XV Director on Switch Limits

It’ll probably get the pocket edition

The Final Fantasy XV team has been incredibly busy. Gone are the times when you merely ship a AAA game and consider it done – nowadays, you have to optimize patches, offer free or paid content, and create spinoffs. Final Fantasy XV is exploring nearly every aspect of this strategy, including ports and a sort of Pocket Edition demake.

When speaking to DualShockers, director Hajime Tabata gave us an indirect indication that the very same Pocket version might truly land on the Switch. He re-emphasized that the team was considering XV on the Switch, but elaborated further that the system struggles to handle the game’s Luminous Engine, and that they are “exploring” Unreal Engine 4 and Unity.

What does all of this imply? Well, the likelihood is that they won’t rework the colossal XV for the Switch. Instead, a Pocket release that still encompasses most of the same story highlights seems much more probable. This is all mere speculation as Square could eventually make the full version work perfectly (Tabata says that more research on the Switch and better optimization could lead to that), but for now, I don’t envision them investing a huge amount of effort in a 1:1 port, given that their work is already demanding with the recently announced PC version.
