For quite some time, there hasn’t emerged a game as phenomenally popular as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. This indie gem, still in its Early Access phase, has astonishingly achieved a new milestone by selling 10 million copies. At this juncture, it seems the development team can do nothing amiss. Even the introduction of loot crates couldn’t halt the momentum of the PUBG express. So, what on earth could?

This remarkable milestone was spotlighted through an invitational tournament held over the weekend, accompanied by a bunch of various stats that hold little interest for me. The more significant news is that the Xbox One version now has a more definite release date. If you had presumed that the game wouldn’t debut by the end of 2017, I’m sorry to affirm your doubts.

The PR email states that PUBG is, “launching exclusively on Xbox One as part of the Xbox Game Preview program in late 2017, with the final version launching in early 2018 across the Xbox One family of devices.” It seems inevitable, considering that the final PC version doesn’t even have a fixed launch date.

I’m rather unsure about my personal sentiments towards the game at present. While I cherish the concept, the manner in which alterations to the game have been managed strikes me as rather underhanded. I detest microtransactions in any form, and blatant dishonesty about their eventual inclusion truly irritates me. Also, I’m skeptical if we’ll witness regular updates as we have been upon the launch of the final version.

Irrespective of the destiny of PUBG, it’s undeniable that it will mold the future of game development. For something to burst onto the scene from obscurity and take the industry by storm is an exceptionally rare occurrence nowadays. Some other team is certain to attempt to replicate this success, which is likely to result in a flood of shoddy “Battle Royale” imitations. I simply can’t wait…
